Gila, New Mexico, United States 88038
Relax with this true New Mexico experience with free wi-fi at the Rio Lobo Cottage and vacation cabin rental at Double E Ranch - a vintage remodeled cowboy bunkhouse on an historic working ranch in southwest New Mexico near the Gila National Forest. Excellent, unlimited opportunities for hiking, bird watching, dark skies for star gazing, some of the best rock hound locations in the southwest. The Gila River Riparian area is 10 minutes from your cabin.
Enjoy the southwestern ranch comforts of what was the original bunkhouse for the cowboys who worked this 100 year old heritage ranch purchased 23 years ago by Debbie and Alan Eggleston, renaming it Double E Ranch. At nearly 5,000 feet elevation, this lovingly remodeled, cozy, 1-bedroom cottage offers all the comforts of home right here in the heart of magnificent vistas adjoining the southwestern area of the New Mexico Gila National Forest High Desert region.
Centrally located at New Mexico Cabin Rentals, the Rio Lobo is a 950 square foot Cottage with a screened in porch, perfect for savoring your first cup of coffee in the morning, reading a book while enjoying the afternoon breeze, or relaxing with a refreshing beverage after a day of exploring.
If you listen carefully, you'll still hear the "ca-chink, ca-chink" of the spurs and boots that once walked these same refinished original hardwood floors. The Rio Lobo Guesthouse offers lots of living space and extreme comfort, so it really lends itself to an extended vacation. The kitchen features full-sized appliances, including a dishwasher, and an adjacent dining area, so you can cook-in as much as you’d like, saving you the hassle and expense of dining out. The completely remodeled bathroom comes with large bathtub/shower, and a conveniently located private washer/dryer. Pack as light as you want – you won’t run out of clean clothes!
With vintage Western Cowboy art and framed Western romance paperbacks from 1920 through 1950s, include those of Louis L’Amour and Max Brand. Meticulously handcrafted 50 year old maple hutch, coffee, end and dining tables, the spacious living room is reminiscent of times gone-by. But don’t let the nostalgia fool you; when you aren’t exploring New Mexico Cabin Rentals’ 360 acres of unspoiled nature, or expanding your day trips to Silver City and beyond, you can enjoy a movie from Direct TV on the flat screen TV or extensive DVD library, lounging in the recliner or love seat sofa. Download favorite choices from the internet or just read a good book.
The Rio Lobo bedroom is furnished with handcrafted, maple dresser and headboard. Whether you’ve spent the day hiking, birding, reading, or riding, you’ll find sleep comes easily as you are lulled by the quiet sounds of the high desert nights, snuggled in luxurious cotton sheets on your queen sized bed.
The Rio Lobo Guest House is ideal for all seasons, with air conditioning and gas heat wood stove. FYI, because of our remote location, you may not have cell service at your cabin. If your cell carrier is Verizon, and your phone wi-fi capable, you will be able to make cell phone calls using wi-fi.
The Rio Lobo is the original old bunkhouse and is located near the paddocks of the Double E Ranch so you’ll often find horses grazing and playing in your backyard. The cowboys who once made Rio Lobo their home didn't have far to walk to lasso their horses for the days' ride. If you venture out a little further, you’ll be amazed by the scenery and the wildlife. Jackrabbits, havelinas, roadrunners and hundreds of native and migratory birds are pretty common fare within the compound but once you cross Bear Creek, it wouldn’t be uncommon to spot Rocky Mountain Big Horn Sheep, wild turkey, black hawks, golden eagles or even the occasional bear off in the distance.
At New Mexico Cabin Rentals, you can participate in a wide-variety of free-flowing activities , including hiking, birding, rock hounding, photography, stargazing, archaeology and maybe some mountain biking. Explore the hill sides along Bear Creek for the remnants of the Ancient Ones - the Mimbres Indians whose famous red/ black pottery shards can still be found, as well as arrow heads and or other hand made tools. The trail riding is spectacular. The horse is the original 4x4. And, if you’d like to consider bringing your own horse, we’ve got self-care pens and a 300’ x 250’ enclosed arena. Or you can arrange for an equine rental if you let us know in advance. Call for more information about the horseback riding experiences that are available and the associated pricing.
If you want to experience more of what the Land of Enchantment has to offer, you can hike the Double E Ranch Trail, our direct private access to nearly 3 million acres of public lands (New Mexico State Land, Bureau of Land Management and Forest Service) where you can rock hound and explore Native ruins or just enjoy the spectacular vistas in every direction, for miles and miles - seeing all the way to the Arizona Border!!

Thank you so much for a delightful visit! I love the place (!) and hope to return. Have a wonderful Spring!
Guy - We sincerely appreciate your visit. Gracious, considerate and two of the sweetest dogs! Thanks, too, for leaving the cabin so clean and tidy. We truly hope to see you again, one day.
Really Enjoyed Our Stay
“My Husband and I really enjoyed our stay. We live in AZ and were pleasantly surprised by the area. The cabin and property were better than expected. The cabin was clean and comfortable. We would definitely recommend this property to anyone who wants to get away from the city.”
Space, Comfort and a Southwestern Feel
Tim and I spent a Memorial Day in 2016 in the Hideout Cabin at New Mexico Cabin Rental. This time, we were lucky enough to be the first guests booked into the Rio Lobo Bunkhouse. The weather perfect (78F), the night were clear and star filled. There is so much authentic atmosphere inside the cabin, comfort, space to spread out and really relax. The bed was sooooo comfortable! Having the washer/dryer inside the cabin was a real plus. Extra large refrigerator/freezer would make it easy to plan an extended stay. Debbie and Alan have made every effort to fill the cabin with anything and everything you need to spend a relaxing weekend or a month or more! We grilled in the evening - they provided the grill, charcoal and fluid. Being so close to the horses (and young foal and mare) was a real joy to watch. We loved it and plan to return this time next year!
Thanks Tim and Luz. We sincerely appreciate your willingness to be so flexible and glad to hear you enjoyed the Rio Lobo Guesthouse. We look forward to your visit next year! Debbie
