Consider spending a weekend or a week in a true New Mexico ranch bunkhouse Cottage. The Rio Lobo Bunkhouse Cottage is a gently upgraded authentic vintage 1940's cowboy bunkhouse making it easy for you to explore all that southwest New Mexico has to offer from the comfort of this fully furnished, original ranch bunkhouse. This historic cabin is situated at the headquarters of the Double E Ranch in a hidden valley just a few miles from the Village of Gila NM. Adjacent to nearly 3 million acres of public lands, you are invited to take a peak at what early ranching life was like in the rural southwest, Grant County New Mexico.
The Rio Lobo Cottage is the original bunkhouse used by those cowboys who worked this 130 year old historic southwestern ranch from about 1945 to sometime around 1996. At nearly 5,000 feet elevation, this lovingly restored, cozy 1-bedroom Rio Lobo Bunkhouse Cottage offers milder weather in every season, 300 days of New Mexico sunshine and clear, dark New Mexico skies made for star gazing.
Centrally located at New Mexico Cabin Rentals at Double E Ranch, the Rio Lobo Cottage is a 950 square foot vacation rental with plenty of 'old west' charm and feel. The covered deck is perfect for savoring your first cup of coffee in the morning, reading a book while enjoying the afternoon breeze, or relaxing with a refreshing beverage after a day of exploring.
If you listen carefully, you may still hear the "ca-chink, ca-chink" of well-used spurs and boots that once walked these same hardwood floors. The Rio Lobo Bunkhouse Cottage offers lots of living space so it really lends itself to an extended vacation. The kitchen features full-sized appliances, including a dishwasher, and an adjacent dining area, so you can cook-in as much as you’d like, saving you the hassle and expense of dining out. The completely remodeled bathroom comes with large bathtub/shower, and a conveniently located private washer/dryer. Pack as light as you want – you won’t run out of clean clothes!
Decorated with vintage Western Cowboy art and framed Western romance paperbacks from 1920 through 1950s, including those of Louis L’Amour and Max Brand you'll soak up the spirit of the Old West. Meticulously handcrafted 75 year old maple hutch, coffee and side tables, the spacious living room is reminiscent of times gone-by. But don’t let the nostalgia fool you; when you aren’t exploring New Mexico Cabin Rentals’ 360 acres of unspoiled nature, or expanding your day trips to include Silver City and beyond, you will still find time to relax, decompress and feel the quiet.
The Rio Lobo Bunkhouse Cottage bedroom is offers a super comfortable queen sized mattress, furnished with handcrafted, maple dresser and headboard. Whether you’ve spent the day hiking, birding, reading, or riding, you’ll find sleep comes easily as you are lulled by the quiet sounds of the high desert nights, snuggled beneath luxurious cotton sheets.
The Rio Lobo Bunkhouse Cottage is ideal for all seasons, with air conditioning and gas heat fireplace. Even cell service at your cabin, if your smart phone is smart enough to have wi-fi. Once you're, check your settings, switch to "wi-fi" and log onto our network. Sorry, no network, cable or satellite TV stations. But, you can stream your favorite movies, check your email or have a working vacation.
You’ll often find horses grazing and playing in your backyard. The cowboys who once made Rio Lobo Bunkhouse their home didn't have far to walk to lasso their horses for the days' ride. If you venture out a little further, you’ll be amazed by the scenery and the wildlife. Jackrabbits, havelinas, roadrunners and hundreds of native and migratory birds are pretty common fare within the compound but once you cross Bear Creek, it wouldn’t be uncommon to spot Rocky Mountain Big Horn Sheep, wild turkey, black hawks, golden eagles or even the occasional bear off in the distance. We've even seen a mountain lion or two.
At New Mexico Cabin Rentals, you can participate in a wide-variety of free-flowing activities , including hiking, birding, rock hounding, photography, stargazing, archaeology and maybe some mountain biking. Explore the hill sides along Bear Creek for the remnants of the Ancient Ones - the Mimbres Indians whose famous red/ black pottery shards can still be found, as well as arrow heads and or other hand made tools. The trail riding is spectacular. The horse is the original 4x4. And, if you’d like to consider bringing your own horse, we’ve got self-care pens and a 300’ x 250’ enclosed arena.

This is one vacation we will not soon forget! Your sweet hospitality, friendship and the southwest beauty is etched in our minds...and when that starts to fade, we've got hundreds of pictures! 3 weeks was still not enough!
If you stay once, you'll want to go again or stay longer!
We appreciate you choosing to stay in the Rio Lobo Cottage. It was our pleasure sharing our corner of the world with you and Patrick!
Thanks for a wonderful stay!
The Rio Lobo Bunkhouse is a charming and comfortable place that has great amenities. The screened in porch is the perfect place or enjoying morning coffee or evening tea while listening to the cicadas, frogs and birds. Thanks so much for a wonderful stay!

Authentic Feel, Great Surroundings!
The cabin had everything we needed. It was quaint, in a great location and so quiet. We were visiting Silver City, which was about 30 miles away. Next time we come out we’ll visit the cliff dwellings. We are already planning to come back next year.
Thank you Brian. We sincerely appreciate your positive feedback. We're looking forward to your next visit!
Debbie, we had a wonderful time! It was the perfect quiet and quaint little get a way. We plan on returning in the future. Thank you!
Peaceful, rested and relaxed. A perfect vacation get-a-way from the stress of a high pressure job. Loved the natural setting. Cottage very cozy.
Thank you so much for a delightful visit! I love the place (!) and hope to return. Have a wonderful Spring!
Guy - We sincerely appreciate your visit. Gracious, considerate and two of the sweetest dogs! Thanks, too, for leaving the cabin so clean and tidy. We truly hope to see you again, one day.
We loved this bunkhouse Cottage! The bed was extremely comfortable, all the rooms are large and open. Having our own washer/dryer was so convenient. We had everything we needed to feel completely at home and enjoy exploring the Gila area. Having the screened porch was a real bonus with comfy rockers.
We sincerely appreciated your visit and completely enjoyed hosting you. Perfect guests! Hope you plan another winter away from snow again, next year!
Thanks for your great hospitality! It was fantastic to be able to get away to warmer weather, bring my own horses, use your horse facilities, and explore such beautiful country. The weather was unbelievably perfect - winter...60-70F...sunshine! Your staff was always willing to assist, offer suggestions and made sure I was completely taken care of. Traveling single, I felt welcome, completely comfortable in my Cottage.
Enjoyed our Stay in the Bunk House!
We enjoyed our stay in the Bunk House! It was especially n ice to be able to see the horses right out the kitchen window and to be able to go out and love them! The young one is such a nuzzler! Thanks for making accommodations for us!
Really Enjoyed Our Stay
“My Husband and I really enjoyed our stay. We live in AZ and were pleasantly surprised by the area. The cabin and property were better than expected. The cabin was clean and comfortable. We would definitely recommend this property to anyone who wants to get away from the city.”
Space, Comfort and a Southwestern Feel
Tim and I spent a Memorial Day in 2016 in the Hideout Cabin at New Mexico Cabin Rental. This time, we were lucky enough to be the first guests booked into the Rio Lobo Bunkhouse. The weather perfect (78F), the night were clear and star filled. There is so much authentic atmosphere inside the cabin, comfort, space to spread out and really relax. The bed was sooooo comfortable! Having the washer/dryer inside the cabin was a real plus. Extra large refrigerator/freezer would make it easy to plan an extended stay. Debbie and Alan have made every effort to fill the cabin with anything and everything you need to spend a relaxing weekend or a month or more! We grilled in the evening - they provided the grill, charcoal and fluid. Being so close to the horses (and young foal and mare) was a real joy to watch. We loved it and plan to return this time next year!
Thanks Tim and Luz. We sincerely appreciate your willingness to be so flexible and glad to hear you enjoyed the Rio Lobo Guesthouse. We look forward to your visit next year! Debbie
